DUP MLA Calls Daisy Hill Emergency Surgery Decision “Unsurprising”

Newry and Armagh DUP MLA William Irwin has called the recent announcement of emergency general surgery at Daisy Hill Hospital being moved to Craigavon permanently as unsurprising,

Commenting on the proposal to close Emergency General Surgery at Daisy Hill Newry & Armagh DUP Assemblyman William Irwin MLA stated:

“This sadly isn’t a surprising announcement given that it has been a year since the service was withdrawn under the description of an ‘interim measure’ as this service was consolidated in Craigavon.  The reasons behind this decision have been well documented by health officials, however I am sure the public will want to have their say as part of the consultation exercise in the coming weeks.

On the wider theme, it is absolutely essential that the emergency department facility continues to be provided at the site and whilst the recent announcement of significant electrical works to the building is very welcome, there must be a renewed and strategic focus on the hospital to preserve and enhance services for the great many people for whom this hospital is a vital resource.”
