The Alliance Party has selected Joy Ferguson, to represent the Banbridge electoral area in the upcoming Council elections in May. The selection follows the decision by the current Alliance councillor for Banbridge Brian Pope to step aside.
Mrs Ferguson, a resident of Banbridge, was educated locally at Dromore High School and Banbridge Academy and works as an Economist and policy specialist in climate action. Her local priorities include continuing the campaign for a safer A1, championing the community park in Rathfriland and promoting economic development across the area.
Mrs Ferguson said “I am delighted to be selected as the local Alliance candidate for Banbridge. I am passionate about a shared society and its ability to heal community division. My campaign will focus on community wellbeing, economic regeneration and development and building positive relationships between business, Council and the community.

Alliance MLA for the area, Eoin Tennyson said, “Brian has been a wonderful councillor and a strong advocate for Banbridge. It is sad to lose him from frontline politics, but I am delighted he is remaining an active member of Alliance in Upper Bann and I am excited to see him out on the campaign for Joy this year.
“Joy is a passionate, hard-working and committed campaigner who will be an outstanding representative for everyone in Banbridge.
“In May, the public will have an opportunity to pass judgement on the DUP’s ransom politics. With Joy among our strong team of candidates, we can build on momentum from the Assembly election and send a clear message to those responsible for this cycle of collapse and crisis.”
Outgoing Alliance councillor, Brian Pope said “The last four years as the Alliance representative for Banbridge has been a fantastic journey and I hope that I have helped as many local people as I could during my term.
“I wish to thank my family, local residents, my colleagues and everyone who has supported me over that time. Joy will be a fantastic representative for the area and I look forward to helping her in the upcoming campaign.”
