SDLP Newry City Councillor Michael Savage has expressed his shock at the announcement of job losses at Newry based company Norbrook. Newry based business Norbrook, announced it is cutting 180 jobs. The company, which has 1,600 staff in the city across three sites, said that changes in its operating environment, including economic challenges and more competition are the reasons behind the move.
Cllr Michael Savage said:
“I am shocked to hear of the scale of potential job losses at Norbrook which is one of our biggest employers in the city and district. I feel deeply for every one of the staff facing redundancy and their families as a result of this decision by the company and I hope that every effort is made to avoid compulsory redundancies.”
“I have no doubt this will have been a very difficult decision for the company. Norbrook is a global leader in its field with excellent local talent and is held in high regard across the world and I hope that the company will bounce back from this and return to strong growth.”
“It is important that job creation is put front and centre of the new Council’s agenda and it is important that Invest NI exhausts all opportunities to attract new inward investment to replace the jobs that are being lost at Norbrook.”
