The SDLP has nominated Councillor Declan McAlinden and Jackie Coade as its candidates for the Criagavon area in the upcoming local government election.
Councillor McAlinden and Ms Coade have handed in their nomination forms to Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council.
SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood said the pair would be a formidable team for people in the area.
Foyle MP Mr Eastwood said:
“I’m delighted that Declan will be contesting the upcoming election and that Jackie Coade has decided to join our SDLP team. Together they will be strong advocates for people in this area, highlighting the issues that matter to the local community and fighting for better services to ensure people here get the best from their council.”
Councillor McAlinden said:
“I’ve been working on behalf of people in this area for well over a decade and in that time we have achieved some significant improvements for people here, including enhanced sporting facilities, funding for many of our local community organisations and ensuring council responds to the needs of local families.
“The last few years have been very difficult for people in this area and right across the North and we need council to adapt to the reality of what people in our communities are dealing with. Nothing will stop from me from working on behalf of the people I represent and I’ll continue to give everything to deliver for people here.”
Ms Coade said:
“I’m excited about the opportunity to join the strong SDLP team on ABC council. The SDLP has been a positive force for change in this area for a long time and I want to be part of that, driving our community forward and ensuring that local people have a voice in politics here.
“My motivation to get involved in politics has always been to help people and I know that there are many families out there right now who could use some assistance. I have been an activist locally for many years and I believe that council would give me an opportunity to renew and expand that work. People here deserve better and I’ll work each and every day to ensure that they get it.”
