Vital Community Transport Funding Must Be Maintained – Boylan

Sinn Féin MLA and Transport Spokesperson Cathal Boylan is calling for community transport groups to receive proper funding as soon as possible so they can continue to deliver their essential service.

The Newry and Armagh MLA said:

“Today Sinn Féin colleagues and I held a meeting with community transport groups across the north.

“The importance of community transport to rural communities in particular cannot over stated. It connects some of the most vulnerable and isolated with their families and communities and helps facilitate essential journeys like GP visits.

“Community transport is a lifeline for so many people.

“The groups providing this service have been left in limbo and face a very uncertain future with funding only guaranteed until June this year.

“This uncertainty is already affecting their services. It is imperative that in the absence of an Executive that British Secretary of State Chris Heaton-Harris, ensures these services are properly resourced and funded.

“Savage Tory cuts for more than a decade have devastated vital public services. Any further cuts to community transport as a result of a Tory budget would be callous and cruel.”
