Chairperson Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Newry Gateway Club

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson Councillor Michael Savage hosted a reception on Tuesday 17 January 2023 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Newry and District Gateway Club.

Members from across Newry, Mourne and Down came together to enjoy an evening of entertainment. Guests were treated to refreshments, followed by dancing and music provided by Gerard Dornan, Country Harmony.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Michael Savage welcomed everyone to the event saying,  “It is an honour to be here tonight to celebrate 50 years of Newry and District Gateway Club. The Club has come a long way since November 1973! It was first established by a group of parents to provide a social outlet and leisure activities for adults and young children with learning disabilities within the local Community.”

Cllr Savage continued by thanking two founding members and Trustees of the Club attending the Anniversary event Willie McGivern and John McSherry saying, “You should both be extremely proud of everything that the Newry and District Gateway Club has provided for people within our district throughout the years. The club continually strives to look for new ideas while adapting to meet the needs of our young people and adults with learning disabilities. Thank you for your foresight and the time given by everyone who has volunteered or been involved with the club over the last 50 years. Your efforts and dedication continue to keep the Newry and District Gateway Club at the heart of our community.”
