Newry Artisan Market Now a Well Established City Event

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has been operating artisan markets for several years with established markets taking place monthly in Downpatrick, Warrenpoint and Newcastle.

Following successful pilots, the Council has now utilised the existing market space in John Mitchell Place and has established a monthly artisan market in Newry City, which takes place on the second Sunday of every month.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Michael Savage said, “The establishment of the artisan markets is part of the Council’s ‘Make it Local’ campaign which promotes local goods and services and encourages residents to think ‘local first’ when making food and gift choices. These markets are an outlet for local artisan makers, crafters and producers to market and sell their incredible products and they enhance the sustainability and vibrancy of our City and town centres.”

The artisan market in Newry has now been operating for six months and at its most recent market day on Sunday 12 June, it welcomed 32 craft traders and 950 visitors.  Those who attended were able to browse through the fantastic selection of homegrown food and craft while enjoying entertainment from local musicians including Newry Accolade Ukulele group.

Chairperson, Councillor Michael Savage continued, “The Council delivers Artisan Markets across the district and I am delighted that our City is now able to boast its own. If you haven’t already been, why not make a date to attend any of our next artisan markets.  There is a great buzz where you will meet lots of creative people bringing their original work. From handbags to hand balm, caramel squares to candles, woodcraft to wreaths, jewellery to jam – the choice is endless.”

The next Newry Artisan Market will be held on Sunday 10 July 2022, 11am – 3pm and information regarding the Artisan Markets in Downpatrick, Newcastle and Warrenpoint can be found on the Council website:
