Deep Frustration at the Stormont’s Confused Handling of the Covid Crisis. – Aontu

Aontú Derry East Representative Gemma Brolly has stated that there is much frustration arising throughout the country at the confused handling by Stormont of the Covid crisis.

“As cases surge in the north of Ireland and increasing pressure comes on our health service the SDLP, increasingly supported by Sinn Féin and the Ulster Unionist Party now seek to introduce a policy that does not work. Why is Stormont pushing to introduce the Covid Pass when everyone now agrees that it does not stop the transmission of Covid?

For so long the leader of the SDLP was a stalwart for civil rights and activism, working hard to stamp out all acts of discrimination and here we have the present leader rewinding history to install a system of discrimination and denial of rights.

“Citizens are being kept in the dark. Its increasingly difficult to get regular updates on numbers of daily cases who are asymptotic, the numbers with serious illness and the numbers who are vaccinated. We need to know more details of where these cases are from. How many are health care workers, how many are from Nursing Homes, Hospitals and Residential Care Facilities. How many had COVID upon arrival and how many developed COVID within these institutions.”

“One of the major frustrations has been Stormont’s approach to Antigen Testing. Why is Stormont still refusing to use antigen testing in the proper manner given that it has been stated as the best way to tell if a person is Covid free and it does not discriminate? Countries who have used testing successfully such as Denmark to keep the illness suppressed have done so by testing before entry into hospitality. We are still miles way from that here in the north. I have no doubt that the Stormont Executive will be dragged kicking and screaming to doing this in the end, however it maybe too late by the time they do.”
