Slieve Gullion Sinn Féin Councillor, Declan Murphy, has offered his congratulations to the ‘Friends of Derramore’ community group and hailed them as “an example of community led campaigning” for all after the official opening of the Derramore Park.
Speaking after the opening, Declan said:
“I want to just say a massive maith thú to the ‘Friends of Derramore’ today after a long, long campaign they have delivered a first class park and walking trails to the area. These will be a massive boost to both the local economy and the mental health and wellbeing of people across the district.
“The group is a fine example of a grassroots community campaign, made up of people with campaign savvy, who identified a need within the community, put a plan together, built partnerships with the council as well as other bodies and, as a collective, sought funding for the project.
“This campaign, which began in 2011 has been a long one, with plenty of bumps and barriers along the way. However, the group comprehensively and patiently worked their way through the process.
“Vision, determination, respect and no shortage of hard work have given them the result we have with us today of this fantastic community asset in the shape of the park and I don’t doubt that they have plenty more planned for this beautiful corner of South Armagh in the future”
