STOKES PRAISES LOCAL COMMUNITY FOR PERSISTENCE ON PETER MCPARLAND PARK

Newry SDLP Councillor, Gary Stokes, has praised the persistence of his local community after a series of campaigns going back over ten years to have Peter McParland Park in the city upgraded.  The Council agreed at a meeting on Monday night to spend £88,500 upgrading the facility.  The works will include the resurfacing of the playing surface on the current pitch and the provision of new soccer, basketball and netball courts.

Stokes said,

“While a fantastic space the park has the feel that time stood still around 1985.  It is extremely well used but has the look of being unloved and out of date.  A small group of determined local residents have campaigned for over ten years to have the park upgraded.  It is down to their persistence and dogged determination that this is happening.  I look forward to seeing the work completed and the park being fully used.  I wish also to praise the council officers who took this forward”

The decision comes following meetings between local residents, Council officials and Cllr Stokes back in Spring.
