O’Hara Cup | Lurgan BBOB Reserves 0–6 FC Mindwell Reserves
FC Mindwell Reserves marched into the O’Hara Cup quarter-finals in emphatic fashion, producing a ruthless attacking display to dismantle Lurgan BBOB Reserves 6-0.
Six goals, six different scorers and a clean sheet made it an afternoon to remember for Martin Savage’s side, with captain Jamie O’Connor helping lead the charge.
Mindwell wasted little time stamping their authority on proceedings, with Stephen McArdle, Jay Kelly and Keelan Varley combining brilliantly in the opening exchanges.
It was McArdle who broke the deadlock, racing through one-on-one before calmly finding the top-left corner.
Lurgan threatened an immediate response, but goalkeeper Eamon McNally produced an important intervention to preserve the advantage.
Mindwell soon doubled their lead when Simon McAllister’s quickly taken corner found Keelan Varley, who drilled a low finish into the bottom corner.
Two goals up at the break, Mindwell had no intention of easing off.
Manager Martin Savage demanded his players maintain their intensity, although Lurgan emerged determined to fight their way back into the contest.
McNally was again called into action early in the second half, producing another crucial save.
Then came the captain.
A delightful chipped pass from Ben Breen picked out Jamie O’Connor on the right, and the skipper made no mistake, firing low into the net to put Mindwell three goals clear.
O’Connor wasn’t finished there.
Showing excellent skill down the flank, he lifted the ball over himself before delivering a perfectly weighted pass for Oliver Cunningham, who coolly slotted home Mindwell’s fourth.
The fifth arrived following a free kick from Gillen. O’Connor rose to meet the delivery, directing his header into the path of Simon McAllister, who smashed the ball home.
With Savage and assistant Ryan McDowell urging their players to keep possession and continue playing their football, Mindwell delivered one final flourish.
Ciaran Maguire released Ryan Stevenson down the line, and Stevenson showed tremendous composure to round the goalkeeper and slot home number six.
A statement victory, a clean sheet and a place in the O’Hara Cup quarter-final draw.
It was a commanding team performance from Mindwell, who will now eagerly await their next opponents as their cup journey continues.
A touching tribute before kick-off
Before the match, both teams and referee Brian Nelson observed a minute’s silence in memory of Mary Cull, grandmother of Mindwell assistant manager Ryan McDowell.
Everyone at Clanrye News & Sport extends their sincere condolences to Ryan and the entire family at this difficult time.
