NO EASY GAMES: Newry Rovers Hit 12 in Two Games as First Division Takes Another Twist

By Kevin McAteer

Finn Harps move to the top, Cartwheel United close in on the leaders, Orchard United suffer another setback and Newry Rovers complete a remarkable turnaround as the Carnbane First Division delivers another dramatic Saturday.

Just when the Carnbane League First Division appears to be settling into a pattern, another Saturday comes along and changes everything.

The latest round of fixtures on Saturday, 10 October, produced 18 goals across four matches, another change at the top of the table and further evidence of why the division has earned its reputation for unpredictability.

Finn Harps strengthened their position with an impressive victory over Killeavy United, Cartwheel United continued their climb towards the summit, Rockview claimed a significant away win against Orchard United and Newry Rovers produced another remarkable attacking display.

And with only three points separating the top four clubs, the race is becoming increasingly fascinating.

There really are no easy games.

### From Four Straight Defeats to 12 Goals in Two Games

### Newry Rovers 5–0 Ashgrove Rovers

What a difference a fortnight can make.

Not so long ago, Newry Rovers were sitting at the bottom of the First Division without a single point.

Four matches. Four defeats.

Then came last weekend’s extraordinary 7–1 victory over Rockview.

If anyone thought that result might have been a one-off, Newry provided an emphatic answer on Saturday.

A commanding 5–0 victory over Ashgrove Rovers means they have now scored an incredible 12 goals in their last two league matches, conceding just once.

From four consecutive defeats to back-to-back victories, Newry have transformed the mood surrounding their campaign.

They now have six points from six games and, remarkably, a positive goal difference of +2.

For Ashgrove, it was another difficult afternoon. They remain bottom of the table with two points from seven matches.

The challenge for Newry will be maintaining their momentum, but their turnaround is already one of the most interesting stories of the early season.

### Finn Harps Take Over at the Top

### Finn Harps 4–2 Killeavy United

While Newry Rovers were making headlines with their goalscoring exploits, Finn Harps were making an important statement of their own.

A 4–2 victory over Killeavy United takes Finn onto 14 points from seven matches, moving them above Church Street, who entered the weekend leading the division.

It was an important result against a Killeavy side that had enjoyed a strong opening to the campaign.

Finn have now scored 23 goals in seven league matches, underlining the attacking threat they possess.

Their recent results include a 4–2 away victory against Cartwheel United, a 1–1 draw with Greenfield Park and Saturday’s success over Killeavy.

For Killeavy, the defeat leaves them fifth on nine points from seven games.

After an impressive start to the season, they have now gone three league matches without a victory.

Finn Harps, meanwhile, have established themselves as the team everyone else is chasing — at least for now.

### Cartwheel United Continue Their Climb

### Cartwheel United 3–0 Greenfield Park

Cartwheel United are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

A week after travelling to Orchard United and securing an impressive 3–1 victory, they followed it up with another convincing performance.

This time, Greenfield Park were on the receiving end of a 3–0 defeat.

Two consecutive victories, six goals scored, just one conceded and six valuable points collected.

The result takes Cartwheel onto 12 points from six matches, leaving them third and firmly involved in the battle at the top.

Crucially, they have played one game fewer than leaders Finn Harps.

After finishing third in the First Division last season, Cartwheel were always likely to be among the clubs hoping to challenge again.

Their recent performances suggest they have every intention of doing exactly that.

For Greenfield Park, the defeat represents another frustrating afternoon following what had been a promising opening to the campaign.

They remain on eight points from seven matches and will be looking to rediscover their early-season form.

### Rockview Deliver Another Blow to Orchard

### Orchard United 1–3 Rockview

Perhaps one of the most intriguing stories of the afternoon came at Orchard United.

Only a few weeks ago, Orchard were sitting at the top of the First Division with an unbeaten record and looking like one of the strongest sides in the competition.

Now they have suffered consecutive home defeats.

Last weekend, Cartwheel United travelled to Orchard and secured a 3–1 victory.

On Saturday, Rockview repeated that scoreline.

Orchard United 1–3 Rockview.

For Rockview, it was an important response to their heavy 7–1 defeat against Newry Rovers the previous weekend.

Rather than allowing that result to define their season, they bounced back with a victory against one of the division’s early pace-setters.

The win takes Rockview onto eight points from seven matches.

For Orchard, meanwhile, the challenge is to stop a worrying run of results.

After collecting 11 points from their opening five matches, they have now gone two league games without adding to that total.

Their early-season form demonstrated what they are capable of, but the last fortnight has also demonstrated how unforgiving this division can be.

### Saturday’s First Division Results

| Fixture                            | Result |

| Finn Harps v Killeavy United       | 4–2    |
| Newry Rovers v Ashgrove Rovers     | 5–0    |

### Just Three Points Separate the Top Four

The updated league table makes fascinating reading.

Finn Harps lead with 14 points from seven games, but Church Street are just one point behind and have played one match fewer.

Church Street also possess the best goal difference in the division at +12, following their remarkable 8–0 victory over Ashgrove Rovers last weekend.

Cartwheel United are particularly well placed.

They sit third with 12 points from only six matches, meaning a victory in their game in hand would take them above Finn Harps, provided the other clubs’ totals remain unchanged.

Orchard United have slipped to fourth following successive defeats, but remain only three points behind the leaders.

Killeavy United are fifth on nine points, while Greenfield Park and Rockview are level on eight.

Further down, Newry Rovers’ remarkable turnaround has lifted them to six points, with a positive goal difference despite losing their opening four fixtures.

And perhaps the most telling statistic of all?

Just three points separate the top four clubs.

The title race remains wide open.

### The First Division Keeps Delivering

Consider what we’ve witnessed over the past few weeks.

Church Street put eight past Ashgrove Rovers and climbed to the top.

Newry Rovers, without a point after four matches, responded by scoring seven against Rockview and five against Ashgrove.

Orchard United went from unbeaten league leaders to suffering consecutive 3–1 home defeats.

Cartwheel United have put together two important victories.

And Finn Harps have now moved to the summit.

It’s the sort of unpredictability that makes grassroots football so compelling.

There are no guarantees.

A team struggling one Saturday can produce the performance of its season the next.

A side sitting comfortably near the top can suddenly find itself under pressure.

And with several clubs separated by only a handful of points, every result has the potential to reshape the standings.

### No Easy Games — And No Clear Favourite Yet

As the Carnbane First Division moves deeper into October, the race is becoming increasingly fascinating.

Finn Harps have the points advantage.

Church Street have demonstrated their attacking quality and remain exceptionally well placed.

Cartwheel United are building momentum.

Orchard United will be determined to rediscover their early-season form.

And further down the table, Newry Rovers have shown that a difficult start does not have to define an entire campaign.

There is still a long way to go.

But after another Saturday of goals, changing fortunes and unexpected results, one thing is becoming increasingly clear.

This First Division title race is far from settled.

And if the opening weeks are anything to go by, there are plenty more twists and turns still to come.

### Finn Harps lead. Church Street are chasing. Cartwheel are closing in. Newry Rovers are flying. And there are still no easy games in the Carnbane First Division.
