Ratcliffe supports Ladies with Letters’ demand for truth and accountability
Statement by TUV Councillor Keith Ratcliffe:
“I was pleased to attend today’s event at Stormont in support of Ladies with Letters, as letters were delivered to every MLA calling for answers on the cervical screening scandal.
“Approximately 17,500 women in the Southern Trust area were notified that their previous smear tests required review. Behind that figure are women and families who have endured fear, uncertainty and, in some cases, devastating illness and bereavement.
“I commend the women involved in this campaign for their courage and determination. They should never have been placed in this position but not only were they but they have had to work tirelessly to secure answers and protect others.
“The decision announced in May to refuse a statutory public inquiry was deeply disappointing. The Department’s position that existing reviews have sufficiently answered the questions is plainly inaccurate. The concerns of the families deserve to be properly heard and tested.
“I support their call for an independent statutory public inquiry with the powers to compel witnesses and evidence, establish the full facts and examine accountability for the failures in both screening and oversight.
“Every MLA receiving a letter today should read it carefully and act upon it. Expressions of sympathy must be followed by a determined effort to secure truth, accountability and lasting improvements so this can never happen again.
“I urge the Health Minister to reconsider the refusal of an inquiry and work with these women and their families to deliver the answers they deserve. With a new Minister in post it is time for a fresh start on the issue and finally some answers.”
