NO EASY GAMES: Church Street Hit Eight as First Division Delivers Another Stunning Saturday

By Kevin McAteer

Church Street stormed to the top, Newry Rovers hit seven for their first win, Cartwheel United ended Orchard United’s unbeaten start and Finn Harps were held as another remarkable Saturday shook up the Carnbane First Division.

If there was any danger of the Carnbane First Division becoming predictable, Saturday afternoon quickly put an end to that.

There were 22 goals across four matches, an eight-goal demolition from the new league leaders, a stunning seven-goal response from a team that began the day without a point, and a significant victory for Cartwheel United over one of the early pace-setters.

And when the dust settled, there was a new name sitting alone at the top.

Church Street.

Six games into their campaign, they lead the First Division on 13 points, two clear of Finn Harps and Orchard United.

But look further down the table and the story becomes even more interesting.

Only five points separate first and sixth.

The message remains the same.

No easy games.

Eight of the Best as Church Street Go Top

Ashgrove Rovers 0–8 Church Street

What a few weeks it has been for Church Street.

They arrived at The Barley Field with momentum behind them and left having produced the biggest First Division victory of the weekend.

Eight goals. A clean sheet. Three points. Top of the league.

The 8–0 victory represents a third consecutive league win for Church Street following their 5–3 success against Killeavy United and 2–0 victory away to Greenfield Park.

Across those three matches alone, Church Street have scored an extraordinary 15 goals while conceding just three.

They now sit on 13 points from six matches with a +12 goal difference.

There is still a long way to go, but Church Street have put together the sort of run that the rest of the division cannot ignore.

They aren’t simply part of the leading pack anymore.

They’re setting the pace.

Newry Rovers Explode Into Life

Newry Rovers 7–1 Rockview United

If Church Street produced the performance of the day, Newry Rovers certainly provided one of its biggest stories.

Newry entered Saturday still searching for their first points of the season.

They finished it celebrating a 7–1 victory.

After four consecutive defeats, including narrow 3–2 losses against Killeavy United and Orchard United, Newry didn’t just get their first win — they did it emphatically.

The result lifts them onto three points from five matches and, crucially, moves them off the bottom of the table.

It is also another perfect illustration of the unpredictability of this division.

Rockview had recently beaten Greenfield Park 4–1 before travelling to Killeavy and earning a 2–2 draw.

Four points from two games suggested momentum was building.

Then they ran into Newry Rovers.

Seven goals later, the First Division had delivered another result few would have expected.

Cartwheel End Orchard’s Unbeaten Start

Orchard United 1–3 Cartwheel United

This was a significant result at the top end of the table.

Orchard United had been one of the division’s early pace-setters and entered Saturday with their unbeaten league record still intact.

Cartwheel ended it.

A 3–1 away victory gives Cartwheel three important points and moves them onto nine points from five matches, just four behind leaders Church Street.

Perhaps more importantly, Cartwheel have played one game fewer than Church Street, Finn Harps and Orchard.

Their season has already contained some eye-catching results, including the 6–2 victory over Ashgrove Rovers.

Now they have added a victory away to Orchard.

Orchard remain very much involved, sitting third on 11 points from six games, but their first league defeat means another unbeaten record has disappeared.

We’ve seen that story before this season.

And once again:

No easy games.

Greenfield Halt Finn Harps

Finn Harps 1–1 Greenfield Park

While Church Street were running riot, Finn Harps had an opportunity to maintain their own challenge at the top.

Greenfield Park ensured they wouldn’t have things their own way.

The sides shared the points in a 1–1 draw at Derrybeg, taking Finn Harps onto 11 points from six games.

They remain second thanks to their impressive +9 goal difference, ahead of Orchard United on the same points total.

For Greenfield, the point could prove important.

Back-to-back league defeats against Rockview and Church Street had interrupted an excellent opening to the campaign, so taking something from a trip to one of the leading sides represents a useful response.

They now have eight points from six games.

Table following Saturday’s First Division fixtures.

And that table is worth studying.

Church Street may be the outright leaders, but this is anything but a runaway.

Five points separate the top six.

Finn Harps and Orchard United are only two points behind the leaders.

Cartwheel and Killeavy are four behind.

Greenfield are five behind.

Cartwheel have also played one fewer match than each of the current top three.

There is an enormous amount of football still to be played.

22 Goals and Another Saturday of Drama

Saturday’s results:

Ashgrove Rovers 0–8 Church Street
Finn Harps 1–1 Greenfield Park
Newry Rovers 7–1 Rockview United
Orchard United 1–3 Cartwheel United

That’s 22 goals across four matches, an average of 5.5 goals per game.

But the numbers only tell part of the story.

Church Street went top.

Newry Rovers collected their first victory.

Cartwheel ended Orchard’s unbeaten start.

Finn Harps dropped two points.

Greenfield responded after consecutive defeats.

And once again, the First Division table changed shape in the space of one afternoon.

Cleary Celtic Fly the Flag in Junior Cup

There was mixed fortune for Carnbane League clubs in the FONA CAB Craig Stanfield Junior Cup.

Cleary Celtic progressed with a 2–0 victory over Berlin Swifts at Olympic Park.

Elsewhere, Ballyholland were edged out 3–2 by Riverdale, Villa Rovers suffered a 3–2 defeat against Ardmore, while Millburn United’s cup campaign ended with a 6–0 defeat away to Enagh Rovers.

It leaves Cleary Celtic flying the flag from Saturday’s four ties as their cup journey continues.

No Easy Games — And No Sign of That Changing

Week after week, the First Division keeps producing another twist.

Killeavy were top and unbeaten — then Church Street beat them.

Greenfield were unbeaten — then Rockview beat them 4–1.

Orchard were unbeaten — now Cartwheel have beaten them 3–1.

Rockview appeared to be finding momentum — then Newry Rovers, without a point beforehand, put seven past them.

And Church Street?

They’ve gone from chasing the leaders to sitting above everyone else.

That is what makes this division so fascinating.

There is no guarantee that today’s form will survive next Saturday. There is no guarantee that a team towards the bottom cannot beat one towards the top.

Six games into the campaign, Church Street have earned the right to lead the Carnbane First Division.

But with Finn Harps and Orchard United two points behind, Cartwheel and Killeavy four behind and Greenfield only another point further back, there is a long way to go.

The First Division has already given us a 26-goal Saturday.

Now we’ve had another 22.

And as October begins, the battle is becoming increasingly intriguing.

Church Street lead. The chasing pack is gathering. And there are still no easy games in the Carnbane First Division.
