The Carnbane League First Division has delivered another dramatic Saturday — and the battle at the top is getting tighter by the week.
Finn Harps and Church Street both collected important victories on Saturday, while Killeavy United were held by Rockview, leaving three clubs now locked together on 10 points at the top of the table.
Finn Harps occupy first place courtesy of their superior goal difference, Church Street are second and Orchard United sit third — but crucially, Orchard have played one game fewer than both clubs above them.
Killeavy are only a single point further back on nine.
Five rounds into the campaign for most clubs and the First Division is already living up to the reputation that has defined Clanrye News & Sport’s coverage this season:
There really are no easy games.
Finn Harps Hit the Summit
Cartwheel United 2–4 Finn Harps
One of Saturday’s most intriguing fixtures certainly delivered.
Cartwheel came into the weekend with six points from only three league games and fresh from scoring six against Ashgrove Rovers in their previous First Division outing.
Finn Harps, however, had other ideas.
A 4–2 away victory gives Finn three valuable points and takes their total to 10 from five matches.
More significantly, their +9 goal difference is now the best in the division and enough to put them at the top of the table.
For Cartwheel, the defeat leaves them on six points from four games.
They remain within touching distance of the leading group, but Saturday belonged to Finn Harps.
Church Street’s Momentum Continues
Greenfield Park 0–2 Church Street
Church Street are rapidly becoming one of the stories of the opening weeks.
A week after producing a superb 5–3 victory over then-leaders Killeavy United, they went away to Greenfield Park and followed it up with another important result.
This time they didn’t need five.
A 2–0 victory secured another three points and, equally impressively, a clean sheet.
Church Street now have 10 points from five games, putting them level with Finn Harps and Orchard United.
Only goal difference separates the top three.
For Greenfield Park, meanwhile, it has been a difficult couple of league outings.
They began the season strongly but followed their 4–1 defeat against Rockview with Saturday’s 2–0 loss.
They remain fifth with seven points from five matches.
Once again, the First Division has demonstrated just how quickly momentum can shift.
Rockview Frustrate Killeavy
Killeavy United 2–2 Rockview
Killeavy United remain firmly involved in the battle at the top, but Rockview ensured they had to settle for a point on Saturday.
The 2–2 draw takes Killeavy onto nine points.
That leaves them just one point behind Finn Harps, Church Street and Orchard United, although Killeavy have now played six matches — more than any of the three clubs immediately above them.
Rockview, meanwhile, continue to pick up points.
After beating Greenfield Park 4–1 in their previous league outing, Saturday’s draw takes them onto five points from five matches.
Four points from their last two league games represents a useful return and another example of why looking only at league positions can be dangerous in this division.
Three Teams. Ten Points.
The First Division table now makes fascinating reading.

1 Finn Harps 5 +9 10

3 Orchard United 4 +4 10
4 Killeavy United 6 +4 9

9 Newry Rovers 4 -9 0
Table based on the latest Carnbane League standings supplied following Saturday’s fixtures.
It’s worth looking beyond the positions.
Finn Harps, Church Street and Orchard United all have 10 points.
Finn lead on goal difference.
Church Street are level on points after five matches.
And Orchard are sitting third despite having played only four.
Killeavy are just one point behind the leading trio, although they have played six.
Even Cartwheel, currently sixth, are only four points off top spot and have played four games.
It is exceptionally tight.
Orchard Remain Right in the Centre of the Story
One notable absence from Saturday’s results was the scheduled Orchard United v Ashgrove Rovers fixture.
As that game does not appear among the results supplied, Clanrye News & Sport will not speculate on its status or the reason it was not played.
What we do know is that Orchard remain on 10 points from four matches, leaving them with a game in hand on Finn Harps and Church Street.
That makes the situation at the top even more interesting.
Orchard began the weekend as outright leaders.
They finish it third on goal difference — without having lost a point on the pitch this weekend.
That’s how quickly a league table can change.
Mayobridge Win Eight-Goal Premier Thriller
Mayobridge 5–3 Rossowen
There was plenty of entertainment in the Premier Division as well.
Mayobridge and Rossowen produced an eight-goal encounter, with Mayobridge eventually emerging as 5–3 winners.
It continues a remarkable run of goals involving Mayobridge, who had beaten Magheralin Village 7–3 in the Mid Ulster Shield the previous weekend. The league’s official site recorded that cup result.
Twelve goals scored across those two matches certainly suggests Mayobridge are finding the net.
For Rossowen, Saturday brought another difficult Premier Division afternoon despite scoring three times themselves.
Stalemate Between Millburn and Newry Celtic
Millburn United 0–0 Newry Celtic
There was a completely different story in the other Premier Division fixture.
While eight goals were flying in between Mayobridge and Rossowen, Millburn United and Newry Celtic couldn’t be separated in a 0–0 draw.
It means Newry Celtic add another point to their early-season total, while Millburn also take something from what looked beforehand like an interesting test for both clubs.
Another First Division Shake-Up
The story of Saturday, however, has to be the increasingly congested First Division.
Last time out, Killeavy lost their unbeaten record.
Greenfield lost theirs.
Orchard moved to the top.
This weekend, the picture changed again.
Finn Harps are now first.
Church Street are second.
Orchard United are third.
All three have 10 points.
Killeavy sit immediately behind them with nine.
And there are still games in hand scattered throughout the table.
Nobody is running away with it.
Nobody near the leading pack can afford to switch off.
And perhaps most importantly, results are becoming increasingly difficult to predict from one Saturday to the next.
The season is still young, but the early evidence points towards a fascinating battle ahead.
Last weekend there were 26 goals and two unbeaten records disappeared.
This weekend brought another change at the summit.
Next Saturday?
In the Carnbane First Division, you’d be brave to predict anything.
Three teams. Ten points. One increasingly fascinating promotion battle.
No easy games.
