Hospitality Sector Deserves A Level Playing Field – Dáire Hughes MP

Sinn Féin MP for Newry and Armagh, Dáire Hughes, has called on the British government to advance the reduction of VAT for the hospitality sector in the north, following a meeting with party colleague Cathal Mallaghan MP and Hospitality Ulster.

Speaking after the meeting in Westminster, Dáire Hughes MP said;

“Our hospitality sector is an essential component in both urban and rural communities. Cafes, bars, restaurants and hotels are more than businesses, they are social hubs, big employers and economic drivers.

“Despite providing an excellent service and remaining busy, the sector is under huge pressure. The viability of independent hospitality outlets is threatened by British government policy here, particularly on the issue of VAT rates.

“Our local hospitality businesses would benefit massively from bringing our VAT rates in line with that of the 26 counties. The south enjoys a 9% VAT rate, while businesses in the north are burdened with a 20% rate.

“This is unsustainable and of particular disadvantage to businesses close to the border. With the all-Ireland economy continuing to grow, the reduction of VAT for the hospitality sector in the north would be a game changer.”

Dáire Hughes MP continued;

“Sinn Féin Ministers Caoimhe Archibald and John O’Dowd have consistently pressed the British government on this issue. At a time when the cost of doing business is skyrocketing, this reduction would be transformative for local hospitality.

“Sinn Féin in the Executive is using all the powers at our disposal to support the sector and encourage tourism – a vital driver for hospitality. The power to move on VAT rates, however, lies solely with the British government.

“The previous administration had refused to seriously explore this matter but we will be engaging with the new government on this proposal. It’s long past time that they listened to the local hospitality sector, and acted.”
