This morning TUV Newry and Armagh Assembly candidate Councillor Keith Ratcliffe attended the annual roadside service to mark the 47th anniversary of the Narrow Water massacre.
Commenting Councillor Ratcliffe said:
“I was honoured to represent my party and the people of Cusher at today’s event.
“While 47 years have passed, it is more important than ever that events of this nature take place when it is becoming increasingly common for those responsible for the murders to be celebrated. Events such as the Narrow Water massacre remind us that the IRA were cowards who skulked in ditches while the security forces did what they could to defend all members of the community.
“Just a few days ago the Secretary of State travelled to Dublin to cravenly seek their approval for proposals dealing with legacy. At the time, my party leader noted the sick irony of doing that in the week we remember Narrow Water.
“The bombs detonated that day were triggered in the Irish Republic.
“The explosive booster charges for the bombs comprised Irish Industrial Explosives taken from quarries in the Irish Republic.
“Known IRA terrorists were arrested leaving the scene but were never charged with the bombing – in spite of strong forensic evidence linking them to the scene. Tellingly, Gardaí later claimed the evidence was ‘lost’.
“No one has ever been held accountable for Narrow Water — an atrocity which we were reminded today has had ripple effects right up to the present day. Not only does the Secretary of State not bother to press Dublin for answers on these dastardly murderers, but his office wasn’t even represented at today’s event.
“TUV will continue to remember the sacrifices of our brave security forces — and demand that the Government does the same.”
