Sinn Féin MP for Newry and Armagh Dáire Hughes has welcomed Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins’ announcement that the Controlled Parking Zones pilot scheme in Newry will now become permanent.
Dáire Hughes MP said:
“I am delighted that Minister Liz Kimmins has made the additional free hour in Controlled Parking Zones in Newry permanent.
“This is a welcome boost for our city centre, giving people greater flexibility when they come into the city to shop, visit local businesses or attend appointments. By making parking more convenient, we are helping to encourage more people to spend time in Newry and support our local economy.
“The scheme removes much of the stress associated with parking by allowing motorists up to one hour to return to their vehicle after their paid parking session has ended.
“The pilot proved its worth, with around 1,000 drivers across Newry and Lisburn benefiting from the additional flexibility. I look forward to seeing many more people take advantage of this permanent measure.”
Dáire concluded;
“I’d like to thank Minister Kimmins for this initiative and those local businesses who supported the initial pilot. This decision is a reflection of both Liz’s and Sinn Féin’s commitment to supporting local businesses and the local economy here in Newry.”
