Statement:
In recent months, Sinn Féin, the SDLP and Alliance have attempted to portray the Locals First Initiative as being opposed to immigrant workers and people from different backgrounds. That claim is simply untrue.
Our position has been consistent from the very beginning. We stand for the people of Newry, Mourne and Down—regardless of their background, race, religion or walk of life. Our mission is to ensure local people have a voice, that communities are listened to, and that elected representatives are held accountable for the decisions they make.
We have always supported people who come here legally, work hard, contribute to society and become part of our communities. Across our district, many people from different countries have helped strengthen our economy, supported our public services, started businesses and enriched community life. Their contribution deserves recognition and respect.
Our concerns have never been about individuals who make a positive contribution. Our concerns are with public policy, the pressures placed on housing, healthcare, education and local infrastructure, and the failure of those in power to properly engage with the communities affected by these decisions.
It is wrong to suggest that questioning government policy or council decisions is the same as being against people. Those are two very different things. Healthy democracy depends on open debate, accountability and the right of residents to raise legitimate concerns without being labelled or dismissed.
The Locals First Initiative will continue to stand for every resident of Newry, Mourne and Down. We reject attempts to divide our community through false narratives or political point-scoring.
Our message remains unchanged: put local people first, spend public money responsibly, protect community interests and ensure that those elected to represent us listen to the people they serve.
That is what the Locals First Initiative stands for today, and it is what we will continue to stand for in the future.
