Newry Woman Makes Irish Sporting History After Turning Heartbreak Into World Success

By Kevin McAteer

A Newry woman has made Irish sporting history after becoming the first Irish athlete to earn professional status in the World Natural Bodybuilding Federation (WNBF) Bikini division, a remarkable achievement made even more poignant by the personal journey that led her there.

Aoife Carlisle secured her coveted WNBF Pro Card in 2025, becoming Ireland’s first-ever WNBF Bikini Pro after years of dedication, sacrifice and perseverance.

Speaking to Clanrye News & Sport, Aoife reflected on a journey that began in Newry before taking her to Belfast to study Sports Coaching at Jordanstown. It was during maternity leave that she completed her fitness and personal training qualifications, laying the foundations for what would become an extraordinary bodybuilding career.

Although she had competed before, it was after the Covid-19 pandemic that she decided to fully commit to natural bodybuilding, setting her sights on one day competing on the world stage.

“I always dreamed of stepping on a World Championship stage,” she said. “So I set about doing what it takes.”

Aoife dreamed of being on the World stage.

That dream became reality as Aoife represented Ireland four times at World Championships, finishing in the world’s top five before claiming a remarkable silver medal at the 2024 World Amateur Championships.

However, behind the medals lay unimaginable heartbreak.

The night before travelling to the World Championships in America in 2023, Aoife received the devastating news that her mother had cancer.

Despite the emotional blow, her mother encouraged her to compete.

Following her mother’s passing, Aoife says the gym became her refuge.

“The gym became my place of refuge and I just threw myself into training and distraction,” she explained.

When she finally achieved professional status in 2025, there was one person foremost in her thoughts.

“My mum especially… the very first emotion was how much I appreciate everything she has done and still helps me to achieve.”

Preparing to compete at elite level demanded complete commitment.

“It has become my way of life,” Aoife said. “During prep you have to plan everything, from your nutrition to your training. You can’t simply eat out whenever you want. But I enjoy those little challenges.”

She also paid tribute to those who helped her throughout her journey, including close friend Ciara Mooney, who trained alongside her, friends Marie Claire, Leanna Graham and Ciara McLoughlin, who travelled with her to international competitions, along with her clients, wider family and, most importantly, her daughter.

“My daughter has always been so proud,” she said.

Encouraging others to consider natural bodybuilding, Aoife described it as a sport that not only develops physical fitness but also creates lifelong friendships and opportunities to travel the world.

“It’s a fantastic sport. Competing naturally gives you the opportunity to look after your health and wellness whilst achieving new goals. The community is so welcoming.”

Now, despite reaching professional status, Aoife is already looking ahead.

Aoife has a massive future ahead of her.

Having experienced the standard of professional competition on the world stage, she plans to spend time developing her physique before returning stronger. She will also take on a new role this year as a competition judge, adding another chapter to an already remarkable career.

From Newry to the world stage, Aoife Carlisle’s journey is one of determination, resilience and unwavering commitment proving that even through life’s greatest challenges, extraordinary achievements are possible.
