Ex DUP Leader Donaldson Guilty of Child Sex Abuse Charges Including One of Rape

The background

Jeffrey Donaldson was one of the best-known politicians in Northern Ireland. He served as a Westminster MP for many years, was a former leader of the DUP, and played a major role in unionist politics.

In March 2024, the PSNI announced that a man in his early 60s and a woman in her late 50s had been arrested as part of an investigation into historical sexual offences. Donaldson and his wife were subsequently charged.

Within hours of being charged:

He resigned as DUP leader.

The DUP suspended his membership.

He denied all allegations.

The Allegations

The prosecution alleged that Donaldson had abused two girls over a prolonged period when they were children.

The offences were alleged to have taken place over many years, beginning in the mid-1980s and continuing into the 2000s.

He denied every allegation.

The trial

The case was heard before a jury at Newry Crown Court over several weeks.

The prosecution’s case relied primarily on:

The testimony of the complainants.

Supporting evidence presented during the trial, including documents and other material the prosecution argued corroborated parts of their accounts.

The defence argued:

The allegations were untrue.

Memories relating to events decades earlier could be unreliable.

Donaldson maintained his innocence throughout.

As with any criminal trial, the jury was directed that the prosecution had to prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

The verdict

After deliberating, the jury found Donaldson guilty on every charge before it.

The convictions included:

One count of rape.

Multiple counts of indecent assault.

Multiple counts of gross indecency.

Following the verdict:

He was taken into custody immediately.

Bail was refused.

The judge indicated that a substantial custodial sentence is expected.

His wife

His wife had also been charged.

However, medical evidence led the court to conclude that she was unfit to stand trial because of her mental health.

Instead, a “trial of the facts” was held. This procedure does not determine criminal guilt. It asks only whether the alleged acts occurred. The jury concluded that the acts alleged against her had occurred. The court will now decide the appropriate legal disposal in light of her fitness to stand trial.

Why the case is so significant

The case has had a major political impact because Donaldson was:

Leader of the DUP.

One of the longest-serving MPs in Northern Ireland.

A central figure in the restoration of the Stormont Executive shortly before his arrest.

His resignation created a sudden change in DUP leadership and had significant consequences for Northern Ireland politics.

What happens now?

The next stage is sentencing. The judge has already indicated that imprisonment is inevitable, but the length of the sentence will be decided at a later hearing after considering all relevant reports and any victim impact statements.

This case is one of the most significant criminal cases involving a senior politician in Northern Ireland in recent decades.
