Older people across NI are being asked to check if they could receive help with housing costs, including rent or rates, through the Housing Benefit scheme.
Administered by the Housing Executive, help is available to pension-age customers who are finding it difficult to meet essential household costs, particularly those living on fixed or lower incomes.
Housing Benefit, funded by the Department for Communities and delivered by the Housing Executive, can help pensioners who rent their homes by covering some or all of their rent and rates.
Additionally, pension-aged homeowners may also be eligible for help with rates, depending on their circumstances.
Gillian Greer, Housing Executive Assistant Director of Housing Benefit, said; “Our message is simple – don’t miss out on support that could help ease financial pressures.
“Even if you’ve never claimed before, or your circumstances have changed, it’s worth checking what you may be entitled to.
“Support is available for those paying rent and also for pensioners who need help with rates.
“Many older people may not realise the full range of support available to them and, while they carefully manage their finances, rising living costs can still place pressure on household budgets.
“Housing Benefit remains available to pension age customers and is not replaced by Universal Credit for this group.

“Support with rates is also means-tested and designed to assist those on low incomes.
“Claims are assessed based on individual circumstances, including income, savings and household details so contact us to get the advice you need.”
