SDLP Leader Claire Hanna MP has said the UK and Irish Governments must acknowledge growing momentum for reform of the Stormont institutions.
She was speaking after Sinn Féin became the latest party to publicly endorse reform.
South Belfast and Mid Down MP Claire Hanna said:
“There is clear momentum behind Stormont reform and it can no longer be ignored. A number of parties have now brought forward concrete proposals to make our institutions work more effectively and it is time for the UK and Irish Governments to engage seriously and begin a focused process of negotiations to deliver meaningful change.
“While parties may differ on some aspects of reform, there is broad agreement on issues such as electing a Speaker, ending harmful Executive vetoes and preventing parties from paralysing Stormont to serve narrow political interests.
“The SDLP has consistently argued for a short, sharp process to agree reforms before the next Assembly election. There is significant common ground between those advocating change and the responsibility now lies with the British and Irish Governments to seize this opportunity and deliver institutions that work more effectively for the people of Northern Ireland.”
