Newry, Mourne and Down District Council has agreed to invest in a number of upgrades to leisure and community facilities in Warrenpoint, Cullyhanna and Kilkeel.
The changing pavilion at the Milltown community sports facility in Warrenpoint is to be replaced, with a new roof fitted at Cullyhanna Community Centre where internal repairs will also be carried out.
Ultra-modern fitness equipment will be purchased for Kilkeel Leisure Centre where work on a major £3.3 million modernisation programme is continuing.
A recommendation to proceed with the investment was endorsed at a meeting of the Council’s Strategy, Policy and Resources Committee on 14 May and will be considered by the full Council when it meets next month.
In Warrenpoint, the existing pavilion remains closed and is being replaced as it’s no longer fit for purpose which has resulted in the loss of changing, showering and toilet provision for users.
The Council is proposing to appoint a contractor to provide a modern, modular changing pavilion, similar to one at Dundrum playing fields which meets health and safety standards.
In addition to fitting a new roof at the Cullyhanna Community Centre, which is managed by the Cullyhanna Community Association, required internal work includes enhancing insulation, damp removal, painting, fitting new vinyl flooring, electrical testing and replacing a number of suspended ceiling tiles. The proposed work is scheduled to take place over the summer.
At Kilkeel Leisure Centre, new equipment for the ultra-modern fitness suite will be similar to that available at Newry and Downpatrick Leisure Centres.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Philip Campbell said, “Investment in leisure and community facilities is part of our drive to deliver for residents. We want to ensure they have access to modern buildings and the very best facilities which meet their needs.
“The investment in Warrenpoint, Cullyhanna and Kilkeel is welcome and helps meet our commitment to improve the health and wellbeing of everyone in the district and reduce health inequalities.”
Cllr Campbell said community and leisure facilities play a role bringing communities together and improving quality of life for residents of all ages.
“Modern leisure and community facilities help create healthier, stronger and more connected communities and this investment will have a positive impact,” he added.
