Grant: We Need a State Construction Company to Help Housing Crisis

Nicola Grant Workers Party representative has commented on a report that the Stormont Housing Minister is only able to fund half the public homes needed this year to fulfill the Executive’s Program for Government Commitments. Ms. Grant said the Workers Party in our response to the housing section of the programme for government in late 2024, called for a State Construction Company to be set up; to deal with the housing crisis, this would also create well paid sustainable employment and apprenticeships for our young people, and would be a much needed boost to the local economy.

The number of people who are registered as homeless and the number of families living in temporary accommodation is scandalous and housing needs should be a priority. Ms. Grant continued homes are much more than bricks and mortar, they affect life chances, to gain employment opportunities, to mental and physical wellbeing and all other aspects of daily living.

The Workers Party is of the view that the programme for government, is nothing more given this latest report, than an attempt to gaslight the citizens of Northern Ireland, every citizen should have the right to quality public housing that is affordable, accessible and meets their physical, emotional and recreational needs. It is time the Executive stopped
making excuses for their failures and put the needs of those who elected them first, instead of their own tribal interests.
