Aontú representative Liam Reichenberg has raised concerns over a recent
statement by the Southern Trust.
Speaking today, Mr Reichenberg said “The recent statement by the
Southern Trust is deeply alarming for life and death services at Daisy
Hill Hospital. The shortage of consultants at Daisy Hill now means that
inpatient care in general medicine is no longer sustainable, the
hospital’s one remaining specialist is leaving, and wide-ranging
services are now at risk.”
“The Stormont parties are failing our community on this life and death
issue. Sinn Fein and other parties created the Daisy Hill Futures Group
years ago to protect services at the hospital, and have many posters
across the district claiming to “protect our services, improve our
healthcare.” Yet they have completely failed to do so.”
“It is not good enough to consistently blame Tory cuts when there has
been a mismanagement of our health service for years now, including when
Michelle O’Neill was Minister for Health. The loss of staff and services
at Daisy Hill is a direct result of political and other decisions to
centralise services in Craigavon Area Hospital and the lack of proper
funding for what should be a 1st class hospital in the City of Newry.
These decisions will cost lives”
“Aontú supports the cross community non-party group SOS Daisy Hill
Action Group. This group recently held a march through Newry City and
public meetings which have been well supported by the people who deserve
a better service. People’s lives depend on protecting Daisy Hill, we
encourage people to join the campaign before we lose services at our
hospital forever” concluded Mr Reichenberg
