“The Mournes have been doing fine for millennia, with minimum human interference, and retain their beauty and wildlife as a result. Let’s keep it this way for future generations”, says Workers Party election candidate Nicola Grant.
Responding to concerns about the Mourne Gateway Project, including proposals to access the Mournes via a ‘gondola style’ cable car, Nicola said,
“I believe that the next Newry, Mourne and Down Council should, as a matter of urgency, review these proposals in a full public hearing.
“I do not believe that the proposed gondola project is either necessary or beneficial. It risks irreparable damage to the immediate environment with little or no return for the people of this area”, she said
“We need a strategic review of the tourism potential of this area, but that must be a fully inclusive discussion based on the safeguarding of the environment, the benefits to the local economy, including secure well-paid employment, and safeguarding the reputation of the region,” Nicola argued, “but that will not be achieved through the promotion of the pet projects”, she said.
