Sinn Féin MLA Pat Sheehan said cuts to the Baby Books scheme are totally unacceptable and said the Executive must be restored now to support children and young people.
The party’s education spokesperson said:
“It’s deeply concerning that a programme to provide babies with free books is the latest service to feel the impact of cruel Tory Budget cuts.
“This comes hot on the heels of the axing of counselling services for school children and the ending of payments to ensure children have a hot meal during the school holidays.
“Children must be supported to have the best start in life, and I will make our opposition to these cuts clear to the Department of Education and the impact it will have on thousands of families.
“Our public services have been left at the mercy of a savage Tory Budget from London with no local ministers at the wheel taking decisions to protect workers and families here.
“The Executive must be restored now so that parties can work together to support our children and young people and our public services from the cruel Tory cuts.”
