Sinn Féin councillor Geraldine Kearns has welcomed £220,000 from the Department for Communities to set up a temporary community space at the Newry City park site.
The Newry City councillor said:
“The £220,000 from the Department for Communities will be used for resurfacing, supplying electricity and water to the site and putting more storage in place.
“This will allow local community groups to get greater use out of the current site.
“This is a welcome investment while we wait for DFC to sign off on the business case for the Newry City Park project.
“Once that has been approved, the council can appoint a design team for the project and we can begin to spend the £16.2 M delivered for the project by Sinn Féin’s Conor Murphy MLA while he was Finance Minister.
“Delivering a first class park for Newry City is a priority for Sinn Fein and we will continue to press the council to ensure it is a priority for them as well.”
