Sinn Féin councillor Geraldine Kearns has reiterated Sinn Féin’s commitment to deliver a first class park for Newry.
The Newry City councillor said:
“Ensuring that this project is delivered is a key priority for Sinn Féin.
“Over the last number of years, the Sinn Féin team has worked to support the delivery of this park, particularly in urging the council to be proactive in seeking the funding needed to deliver it.
“The most significant step came in December 2021 when then Sinn Féin Finance Minister, Conor Murphy MLA, approved £16.2 million for the project.
“Since this announcement, we have pressed the council to work as quickly as possible to take the necessary steps to unlock this funding.
“In June, the council signed off on the Outline Business Case which has now been sent to the Department for Communities for approval.
“A response is expected in the spring, which will allow the council to appoint a design team to begin their work.
“Features such as running, walking and cycling paths, a playpark, greenspaces and a link to the greenway were all highlighted as key priorities by the public and the final design should reflect this.
“Delivering a first class park for Newry city remains a key priority for Sinn Féin and we will continue to press the council to ensure that this project is a priority for them as well.
