Sinn Féin MLA Liz Kimmins has welcomed a commitment from the Department of Foreign affairs to recommence posting Irish Passports to applicants from the North.
The Newry and Armagh MLA said:
“Last week, I wrote to the Foreign Affairs minister, Micheal Martin about the suspension of the posting of Irish Passports to the North and urging him to reinstate this as a priority.
“The decision to stop postage to applicants from the north caused massive uncertainty and disruption for applicants here.
“This came following a record breaking year which saw 128,000 applications for Irish Passports from the north, 50,000 of which were first time applications.
“This whole debacle further highlights the need for an Irish Passport Office in the north to help address this backlog, with Newry in particular being a prime location for any such office.
