SDLP Representative for Cusher Emmajayne McKernan has reminded parents of pre-school and P1 children to make sure they submit their applications to the Education Authority.
Ms McKernan said, “I’ve been contacted by a number of parents inquiring about the timeline for applying for pre-school and P1 places.
“It’s such an important application process but after the Christmas break it can just creep up on parents.
“Admissions criteria was published for all pre-school and Primary 1 settings on the Education Authority website on 13th December. Parents, who have yet to do so, should review the admission policy for their desired settings in preparation for their official application for their child.
“On Tuesday 10th January the EA’s application portal opened and parents have until 12noon on the 27th January to complete the application for their child.
“My experience in previous years, is that the online portal can receive extremely high traffic on the opening day 10th January but I would urge parents not to worry if they can’t get on the system right away as all applications will only be assessed after the 27th January Deadline.
“It’s a huge step for parents and the child starting pre-school, nursery or Primary 1. And I know the application process can be a very unsettling time for those families who don’t secure a place in their first preference setting. For that reason, it is vitally important that parents review the admission criteria and explain on their application form how their child meets that criteria. It’s always a good idea to have a second or third preference too as a backup in case your child does not get into their desired setting.
“Parents should take heed of the strict deadline and ensure they have submitted their application before 12noon on 27th January and all supporting documentation should be uploaded no later than 31st January 2023.”
