Applications Now Open for AONB Youth Rangers in Ring of Gullion and Strangford and Lecale

Calling all 14 to 17year olds!  Applications are now open for the Ring of Gullion and Strangford Lough Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) Youth Rangers programme, starting on the 14 January 2022.

The initiative led by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, offers young volunteers new opportunities for exploration, learning and adventure in the great outdoors within the Ring of Gullion and Strangford and Leacale AONBs over five consecutive days.

This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone interested in the environment to get out and explore these special landscapes. Led by qualified and experienced outdoor leaders, the programme will provide young people with meaningful and fun activities such as first aid, outdoor survival skills and bush craft, canoeing, navigation, practical conservation skills and much more. They will also have the opportunity to meet up with the youth rangers from the other AONB group and enjoy shared activities.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Michael Savage said, “This is a wonderful opportunity for the young people of the district to get outdoors and experience all that our AONBs have to offer; learning how Council officers and our partners work to conserve and protect important habitats and species; learning new skills and making new friends. All while, enjoying the benefits of being in the outdoors! If you are a young person who meets the criteria, I would encourage you to apply and take part in this free programme!”

The AONB Youth Ranger programme aims to provide the young people of the Ring of Gullion and Strangford and Lecale with a deeper understanding and appreciation for their local area, inspiring them to learn and care about their local environment, while also providing them with the skills necessary to safely explore the rural/coastal landscapes

The programme is part funded by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, and Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, Ards and North Down Borough Council, and is free for to attend. Visit www.ringofgullion.org  to learn more and apply. Applications close 21 December 2022.
