Sinn Féin MLA Liz Kimmins has welcomed the announcement on the establishment of an Elective Care Surgical Hub at Daisy Hill Hospital.
The Newry and Armagh MLA said:
“Yesterday’s announcement is very positive, helping to secure the long term future of Daisy Hill Hospital here in Newry city and to tackle the climbing waiting lists for elective surgery.
“As a regional centre for elective care we hope to see investment in Daisy Hill in the form of specialist staff and equipment to fulfil this role.
“It is also a recognition of the potential of Daisy Hill in providing services locally, across the north and also for our natural hinterland both sides of the border, now and in the future.
“It’s vital that Daisy Hill has the resources and certainty to provide first class healthcare and meet the health needs of those that use it, including the provision of a safe and accessible emergency department.
“We need an Executive formed now to deliver a three-year budget that will allow Health Trusts and Department of Health to plan for the future, invest an extra £1 billion in our health service and hire more doctors and nurses.
