Sinn Féin councillor Charlie Casey has stated that people deserve to have a first class leisure facility in Newry and that the council must act to address a number of issues that have arisen in the centre.
Speaking after a meeting with senior council officials this week, the Newry City Councillor said:
“Following a number of issues raised by constituents regarding Newry Leisure Centre, I, along with my Sinn Féin colleagues,Cllr. Valerie Harte and Liz Kimmins MLA met with senior council officials to discuss these.
“We highlighted our serious concerns regarding hygiene and access to facilities within the leisure centre, particularly for customers with disabilities, that have been brought to our attention and emphasised the urgent need for these to be addressed.
“The council have agreed to take steps to address the concerns raised, and we have requested a follow up meeting in a number of weeks for an update on this progress.
“The Newry Leisure centre is an outstanding facility for the people of this district and it is important that it is maintained to the highest possible standards.
“We will continue to engage with the council and press them to ensure that these issues are addressed and that ratepayers have access to a leisure centre that is indeed first class.”
