Time for Chestnut Place Flats to Come Down, says Tennyson

Alliance MLA for Upper Bann, Eóin Tennyson, has called for the flats at Chestnut Place, Lurgan Road to be demolished as soon as possible.

He was speaking after receiving an update from the Housing Executive on the matter, who advised that preparatory work is underway ahead of issuing a contract for demolition.

Mr Tennyson said, “The flats at Chestnut Place have been degraded and derelict for many years. Residents in the area have long complained that the flats have become an eye-sore and have attracted ongoing anti-social behaviour. It is inexcusable that in the midst of a growing housing crisis, the site has lay in a state of disuse and disrepair for such a prolonged period of time.

“I would urge Housing Executive to move as quickly as possible to demolish the flats and bring forward redevelopment plans to bring the site back into use.

“Social and affordable housing is an essential part of housing infrastructure, and it’s projected that between 2021-2026 around 171 new social housing units will be required in Banbridge Town. Appropriate redevelopment to provide high quality, sustainable housing on this site would go a long way to meet Banbridge’s housing need, vastly improve the appearance of the local area and the residential amenity of neighbouring properties.”
