SDLP Health Spokesperson Colin McGrath has questioned the response to Monkeypox in the North.
He was speaking after 27 cases of the virus were confirmed here, with the World Health Organisation labelling the ongoing outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
Mr McGrath said the situation underscored the negative impact of not having a functioning Assembly and Executive in place.
South Down MLA Mr McGrath said:
“I have concerns about the North’s response to the Monkeypox outbreak so far and our preparedness should the situation get any worse in the weeks and months ahead. While there is no need for unnecessary alarm, the matter but still be treated with the utmost seriousness and we must be working to ensure we have enough vaccines, alongside a widespread public information campaign, with regular updates on the situation.
“I am calling on caretaker Ministers to provide public assurances that they are doing everything possible to limit the spread of this virus and protect the public.”
