Sinn Féin Councillor, Oonagh Magennis, has urged farmers across South Armagh to register for the new Soil Nutrient scheme before the 31st August deadline.
The Slieve Gullion Councillor said:
“South Armagh and the wider area are included in zone 1 of this scheme, the first area to be covered.
“Participation in the scheme will enable farmers to apply for various future funding streams such as ‘Farm sustainability’ or ‘Farming with nature’.
“Anyone availing of ‘Beef sustainability schemes’ will also be required to participate in the scheme
“Farmers are environmentalists and their land can play a key role in sequestering carbon and offsetting greenhouse gas emission at farm level
“The Soil health scheme is an important tool to help farmers measure what carbon is being stored in the soils, hedgerows and trees on their farms and how to improve the carbon footprint of the farm and create healthier soil.”
