Sinn Féin councillor, Declan Murphy has supported the building of an Urban Sports track at the site near the Newry Sports centre.
The Slieve Gullion councillor said:
“This project had originally been proposed for Derrybeg a number of years ago but following concern from some of the residents at the original plans.
“However, out of adversity comes opportunity and we now have the chance to locate this site at a central location that will serve many of the urban sports in the Newry area.
“Sinn Féin supported the proposal to transfer the project to a piece of land owned by the council, beside the sports centre to ensure that the project can move quickly and
that the almost £400,000 of funding between SEUPB and the Council is not lost.
“This track will be a great asset to the community and can give a long wanted home to many of our urban sports such as Skateboarding as well as Scooters and BMX.
“I, along with the rest of the Sinn Féin team will work to ensure the council moves forward with this project as quickly as possible to deliver this asset to our communities.”
