Sinn Féin councillor, Charlie Casey has called on local dog owners to be responsible and to carry litter bags and pick up after their pets.
The Newry City councillor said:
“This is an important and serious health issue which is constantly raised by constituents on the doors, in clinics and even when just out walking about.
“This is a serious public health issue as dog litter carries disease which can lead to fever, cough or wheezing, enlarged liver, rash or swollen lymph nodes and even blindness.
“If a child or an adult gets this on their skin they could potentially be damaged for life.
“We need dog owners to be responsible when walking their pets and bring litter bags with them to pick up after their pets.
“Our community needs to be clean and safe for our kids.”
