There was frustration at a recent meeting of the Park Stakeholders Forum, which was described by one participant as a “sham”. No councillors from Newry attended the meeting, which was chaired by a councillor from Crossmaglen.
A spokesperson from Newry 2020, the group behind the campaign for a park, said it was clear that the council was simply not interested in listening.
“As usual, this council is determined to ignore the wishes of ratepayers. We were promised a “world class park”, but this falls well short of that vision. This is not what the community have been asking for, or what the parties said we would get in the run-up to the May elections. They claim that this is just Phase One, but it is clear they have no plans for any additional work. Frankly, we are tired of these repeated attempts to mislead ratepayers.
“At the stakeholder meeting they refused point blank to minute our concerns, and now they are putting up a sign claiming that they are implementing the public’s plans. As the group who have led on this campaign for over eight years, we are clear that these plans do not reflect the wishes of the community. As far as we are concerned, the campaign goes on to get Newry the world class park it deserves.”
