Kimmins Urges Need for Robust Planning System

Sinn Féin MLA Liz Kimmins is calling for action to improve our planning system in order to help build homes, improve environmental protections and facilitate economic development.

The Newry and Armagh MLA stated:

“A recent Audit office report stated that the planning system is failing to deliver for the economy, communities and the environment.

“Of course this was plain to see for anyone who had to deal with the planning system and planning officials from the Department for Infrastructure attended the Committee this week where we called for much needed reform to the system.

“One glaring issue is the long time it takes to complete the statutory consultees process, with many in-house consultees such as DfI Rivers and DfI Roads being some of the main culprits.

“One stakeholder stated that their fastest planning decision in the north took two and a half years, the next fastest was 4 years.

“Meanwhile In the south, you know the date you will receive your planning decision on the day you make your planning application and that the decision is usually within a year of the application.

“So it’s clear that we need a robust reforming of the planning system as it is not delivering for the north, despite its importance to the economy, the environment and for building homes.
