McKevitt Welcomes Completion of £160,000 Flood Alleviation Scheme for Newry

SDLP councillor Karen McKevitt has welcomed the completion of a £160,000 flood alleviation scheme for Newry.

This £160,000 scheme at Greenan Road involved culverting a 40-metre section of open watercourse, upgrading 120 metres of existing culverted watercourse and the construction of a new culvert inlet structure.

Councillor McKevitt said:

“The completion of this vital work has reduced the flooding for 27 homes in this area and I know it will be warmly welcomed by the entire community. We have seen on previous occasions the devastating impact flooding can have, with people’s homes and businesses devastated and destroyed and some families losing all their wordly possessions.

“I’d like to thank SDLP Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon for delivering this £160,000 scheme which will allow her department’s teams to carry out important inspections and maintenance work in future to mitigate any flooding risk. She has once again shown her commitment to delivering for local people and making life better for everyone across the North.”
