Kelly Welcomes Announcements of All-Island Green Projects

SDLP Upper Bann MLA Dolores Kelly has welcomed an announcement from Taoiseach Micheál Martin on major all-island green projects.

Speaking at the Shared Island Forum, Mr Martin announced plans for joint North-South projects including new all-island greenway routes, a network of EV charging points and plans for hydrogen buses and lorries.

SDLP Upper Bann Mrs Kelly said:

“This announcement from Taoiseach Micheál Martin will build on the good work already done in this area by SDLP Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon and will provide significant support in improving connectivity and tackling the climate crisis across our entire island.

“Increased North-South cooperation is always welcome and this delivery shows how the Shared Island has the potential to be a force for real change and growth right across Ireland. All-island greenway routes will bring huge benefits to communities on both sides of the border, promoting active travel and encouraging people to leave their cars at home.

“Increased electric vehicle charging points and more hydrogen buses and lorries will be hugely important as we attempt to tackle the climate crisis that threatens the way of life of everyone on this island and builds on good work already done in this area by Minister Mallon. The increased network of charging points will make transitioning to an electric vehicle a much more realistic option for many people, while hydrogen vehicles are much less harmful to our environment.

“SDLP Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon has led the way on many of these issues on our island and its welcome to see she will be working with the Irish Government to ensure they become a reality. This announcement shows the importance of collaborating on projects that will benefit everybody and I’m excited for further announcements on Shared Island projects in the months and years ahead.”
