Down High Brings Student Motion to Council

Sinn Féin councillor for Slieve Gullion, Aoife Finnegan and her colleague, Cllr. Oonagh Hanlon spoke after proposing the motion drawn up by Down High School, to the full council meeting last night.

Councillor Finnegan said:

“As chair of the Council’s ‘Women’s working group’, I am delighted to see the local democracy week initiative run by this group giving young women the opportunity to get involved in local politics.

“As the winners of the competition, Down High were given the opportunity to have their motion presented to full council last night.

“I was delighted to support them by proposing their excellent, environmentally conscious motion this evening that had great relevance to our local community.

“They have made some excellent points about the current climate emergency and their motion would see our district become a greener one to ensure we played our part in fighting this.

“It was great to see young female voices being championed in the chamber and I hope all of the students enjoyed their experience of politics and hope to see them become further involved in politics in the future.”
