SDLP Assembly Member Justin McNulty has hit out at the General Teaching Council (GTCNI) over their failure to process new teacher registrations.
The Newry & Armagh MLA has said, ‘more than 500 newly qualified teachers are sitting less than a week before start of term without having had their registrations processed by GTCNI – this is completely unacceptable.
‘The Teachers’ Union, NASUWT, brought this issue to the attention of the Education Minister in June, but their request for a meeting to advance the issue was rejected. I have written to the Education Minister urging her to personally intervene.
‘I have been contacted by teachers who have been impacted by this debacle – these are individuals who have put themselves through years of study to pursue their vocation professionally, and are now faced with having to sign on for benefits until the issue is resolved.
‘The last 18 months have been tumultuous for our education system. The GTC, through sheer ineptitude, have added another layer of chaos for both new teachers and principals – all teachers, pupils, and parents deserve better.’
