Clanrye News and Sport sat down with Lee Havern of Platinum Institute. Founded in Newry City, Platinum Training Institute offers training courses in many different areas of fitness such as indoor and outdoor training, personal training programmes and courses for mental health to name but a few.
The Newry founded training group is based at Queens University Belfast is the brainchild of Newry man Lee Havern. We caught up with Lee and had a chat about Platinum Training and how he got the idea for it.
CN – Tell us a bit about your business
LH – Platinum Training Institute is a Health and Fitness Education Training Provider based in Queen’s University Belfast. We offer specialist qualifications in Cancer Rehab, Cardiac Rehab, Mental Health, COPD, Strength and Conditioning, Diabetes and Obesity, Exercise Referral, Personal Training and more. PTI started in December 2014 and has been involved in research projects with Mental Health Foundation, Queen’s University Belfast and Northern Ireland Chest, Heart and Stroke. Health first is our primary goal.
CN – Where did you get the idea for the business?
LH – I have been in the Health and Fitness Industry since I left the Abbey Grammar School in 2000 and have worked in various positions including Personal Trainer, Swim Coach, Tutor, Assessor and Internal Verifier. Through this journey Education has been the key interest. After working as a tutor/assessor/verifier I realised that I wanted to offer education with Health First at its core. So in 2014 I decided to start Platinum Training Institute and link up with Queen’s University Belfast.
CN – What/who influenced you?
LH – The main influence was seeing so many fitness qualifications being offered intensely and fast tracked. Qualifications were being diluted and companies were focusing more on numbers rather than a full learning experience. I don’t believe Education is quick so this was a huge factor in offering qualifications where students learn much more than just the book.
CN – Where did the name come from?
LH – I didn’t want our name to be just fitness related so it was a day of just coming up with various names that would fit the vision. Most companies use the word “Platinum” for their best product. Also, Platinum is rare so I thought we were offering something rare also. Plus PTI has a nice ring to it.
CN – What’s the idea behind the logo?
LH – Simplicity and a 5 star service. I also love the combination of colours and it looks slightly like Harley Davidson’s logo.
CN – Did you find it hard to start off?
LH – It was difficult striking up the relationship with Queen’s University as it took months of meetings to get across our vision and how it would be different. I knew I wanted the business to be based in Queen’s from the very beginning. Also, like most businesses starting off, getting our name out there took time. Striking up the right kind of relationships and connections is key.
CN -What advice do you have for any young person starting up their own business?
LH – Don’t look at what other businesses are doing in the same field as you. Stick to what your vision is. If you start worrying about what competitors are doing it may sway what you offer. Your vision is unique so forget about competition.
