National Day of Action with Cuba called for by the Peadar O’Donnell Socialist Republican Forum and The Cuban Solidarity Forum Ireland, the event in Newry was organised by supporters of the Day of the Action, a statement from the Cuban Ambassador to Ireland, Hugo Ramos, was read out, below is what was read out and the statement:
Firstly I would just like to say thank you to everybody who’s shown up here today on short notice to show solidarity with Cuba. Today’s national day of action will see demo’s taking place across the country in Dublin, Belfast, Cork, Derry, Armagh, Fermanagh, Tir Eoghan as well as here in Newry. Though we may be small in number we lend our voices to the voices of those across Ireland today in Defence of the Cuban Revolution and with the message Cuba Will Win!Can we ask those who are sharing photos of today’s rally to use the hash tag unblock Cuba as over the past few weeks pro-revolution rallys such as this one have been manipulated by counter revolutionary forces.
I’ll now read out a statement from the Cuban ambassador to Ireland
Message on the 68th anniversary of the assault on the Moncada barracks.
Dear Friends. On occasions like this, when the solidarity movement with Cuba in Ireland prepares to celebrate in various cities the 68th anniversary of the assault on the Moncada barracks, a historic event that marked the beginning of the Cuban revolution, Cuban revolutionaries feel especially proud, and at the same time committed to defending the legacy of our revolution.
This commemoration coincides with a brutal media campaign against Cuba.
It has cynically tried to ignore the devastating effect of 60 years of economic blockade, exacerbated viciously by the Donald Trump administration, even during the pandemic.President Joe Biden did not cancel a single one of the 243 new sanctions imposed by Trump. It has tried to hold the government responsible for the reappearance of the Covid-19 pandemic in Cuba, as if the island were the only place that suffered the attacks of the Delta strain. It has tried to ignore that even in the circumstances of our regrowth, Cuba maintains rates of contagion and deaths tens of times lower than those registered by developed countries in Europe, with a similar population.
Yes, it is true, some people in Cuba took to the streets to express their frustration, but those demonstrations were monopolized by violent acts because that was the objective of the campaign, to show a Cuba mired in chaos and call for humanitarian intervention. How can they be called peaceful protesters when they are attacking the emergency room of a children’s hospital in a city, the epicenter of the pandemic; who loot shopping malls, public offices, destroy cars, assault and intimidate people? The cynicism has reached such levels that they have not been ashamed to show images of demonstrations that occurred in Egypt or Argentina as if they had occurred in Cuba, or looting that occurred in South Africa, or police shooting at people who otherwise do not speak Spanish.
Demonstrations in support of the revolution have been silenced and many times shown as demonstrations against, altering the audio of the videos. One of the most scandalous of these falsehoods was published by the New York Times showing a hero of the Republic of Cuba, Gerardo Hernández, participating in a demonstration allegedly against the government.
Dear friends, have no doubts that the Revolution will defeat this campaign and we will continue to be committed to protecting the health of the Cuban people, we will advance with the vaccination campaign with our own Cuban anti Covid-19 vaccines “Abdala” and “Soberana” which have shown more than 92% effectiveness. We will continue our economic transformations and our efforts to mobilize all possible internal resources in order to minimize the impact of the blockade on the population.
We will also continue to strengthen democracy and social justice with new laws emanating from the new constitution approved in 2018.We are a people of peace, always ready to offer solidarity and we will continue to be.We express our deep appreciation to our friends in the Cuban solidarity movement in Ireland.
LONG LIVE THE CUBAN REVOLUTION.UNBLOCK CUBA.
Best wishes and solidarityHugo RamosAmbassador of Cuba
