McNulty Urges Public to Take Care During Hot Weather Spell

SDLP MLA Justin McNulty has urged the public to remain cautious as the North continues to experience an extreme heatwave.

A Met Office extreme heat weather warning came into place on Wednesday and will remain until the end of Friday. Mr. McNulty said it was particularly important to use water responsibly so that NI Water are not forced to introduce a hosepipe ban across the North.

The Newry & Armagh MLA said:

“I urge the public to remain responsible and vigilant during this extreme heat weather warning. It is important that people put on high SPF sunscreen when outdoors and stay covered to avoid sunburn. It’s also important to stay hydrated. This weather will be welcomed by most, but it will have adverse health effects for others. Those with elderly family members and neighbours should check on them to make sure they are coping ok with the increased temperatures.

“I would encourage everyone, particularly young people, to take care around water. While it’s understandable that people will want to cool off, we have already seen one tragedy this week after a young boy tragically lost his life during a swimming accident in Scarva – my thoughts and sincere sympathies go out to his family and circle of friends.

“When visiting coastal areas people should also be mindful and respectful of the local community. People will likely visit local beauty spots in their droves so I would ask everyone to be patient and courteous, drive safely and consider others when parking.

“I also urge pet owners to keep them inside during the hot weather, high temperatures can cause animals to overheat quickly and cause health issues. It is also important not to leave animals locked in your car as this can prove fatal in such extreme temperatures.

“SDLP Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon has warned of water shortages, so I ask that people behave responsibly and only use water when necessary so there is no interruption to supply. We rarely experience such beautiful weather here in the North and if everyone is sensible and thinks before they act we can all enjoy it while it lasts”.
