Newry City football team, Newry Rovers continued their impressive run in cup competitions with another semi final in the Paul Devenney cup. The success follows their recent hard fought victory in the Red Neds cup quarter final.
The quarter final pitted them against a strong Camlough side who are one division above them in the Lonsdale league pecking order. Furthermore it is important to point out that Camlough are top of this league which strengthens Newry Rovers position of giant killers.
With incredible performances from centre backs Darren Mathers and Colly McKeown who along with exceptional goalkeeper Shane Campbell between the sticks have created a powerful “great wall of Newry” in the back line.
A spokesperson for the club said:
“The lads faced Division one champions & knocked them out of the cup to progress to the semi final, the lads played some brilliant football attacked & fought to the final whistle playing with heart & soul which saw them come out victorious & progress to the semi final of another cup. A brilliant performance by the lads and another clean sheet to put the cherry on top.”
Newry Rovers have now booked their place in the semi final of the Paul Devenney cup prompting this writer to go on record and suggest that the Newry based club could be one of the dark horses for this year’s Lonsdale league Division two.
